About Minaki and the Winnipeg River system

Minaki is a cottage country community located 45-kilometres north of Kenora on the expansive Winnipeg River system, where the CN Rail mainline crosses the Winnipeg River between Wade to the west and Ena Lake to the east. The river system widens into several area lakes such as Gun Lake, Little Sand Lake, Big Sand Lake, Pistol Lake and Rough Rock Lake. Minaki is the departure point for over 100 water-access cottages in the area. The river system and lakes are well charted and navigable and offer excellent boating and fishing for walleye, muskie, pike and bass. Minaki was only accessible by rail until about 1960. Now, highway 596 offers good year round road access to the area. Camps, lodges, marinas and a float plane base cater to anglers, hunters and cottage owners. The majority of cottage owners are from Manitoba, Alberta and the United States. Minaki is a 2 hour 30 minute drive from Winnipeg, MB.
